Library plans youth poetry workshop

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, the Kailua-Kona Public Library is presenting children’s poetry workshops at 3 p.m. on April 12 and 26.

Attendees may draw out their inner poet playing with words to enhance self-expression, imagination and creativity with mixed media. The program is suitable for ages 7-12. Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver. Light refreshments will be served. The workshops will be limited to the first 20 children. Architecture Month celebrated with free film screenings

To celebrate April as Architecture Month across the state, the Hawaii Island Section of the Honolulu Chapter of the American Institute of Architects invites the public to free double-feature film presentations focusing on the process of design. The screenings will be of “Design &Thinking” by director Mu-Ming Tsai and “3 warp-speed architectural tales,” a TED talk by Bjarke Ingels.

Understanding business financials workshop

The West Hawaii Small Business Development Center will presenting a workshop, “Understanding Your Business Financials for Non-Accountants” from 9-11:30 a.m. Thursday at Hale Iako, 73-970 Makoko Bay Drive at NELHA.

This workshop will help business owners and managers who are not numbers people better understand and manage their businesses. Participants will learn the importance of good record keeping and develop a better understanding of the balance sheet, profit and loss statement, expense and profit ratios and how these all fit together.

The workshop will be led by Judi Mellon, director of the East Hawaii Small Business Development Center, who has more than 20 years of experience in working with business owners and in financial training.

Library hosts free financial education workshop

Kailua-Kona Public Library will host a Kahua Waiwai Financial Education Workshop from 1-4 p.m. Thursday.

Attendees will learn how to create a spending plan, start a savings plan, build credit, and apply for jobs and employment benefits. Individuals who complete the free workshop will receive a certificate of completion, are eligible for a free credit report and credit counseling and may qualify for up to $2,000 in match savings for a financial goal. Light refreshments will be provided.

Participants who attend the entire session will be entered in a drawing for a gift certificate.

Monsanto Hawaii offers Life Sciences Scholarship

Applications are being accepted for Monsanto Hawaii’s Life Sciences Scholarship. As many as 10 scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded in 2017. This scholarship is open to graduating seniors of all high schools in Hawaii who will be attending an accredited college or university to pursue a discipline related to the life sciences, including agriculture, agronomy, biology, botany, genetics, horticulture, plant physiology, chemistry, crop science and soil science. The deadline for applications is May 1.

Applications accepted for Kahakai preschool

Kahakai Elementary School is accepting applications for half day preschool for the 2017-18 school year.

Student applicants must:

· Be 4 years old by July 31

· Live within the Kahakai school boundaries

· Meet all school entry requirements (i.e. TB clearance, physical exam, and immunization record)

Openings are limited. A lottery will be held at 9 a.m. May 24 in the school office to determine entry slots. Student applicants must meet all the above requirements before being considered in the lottery. Parents will be notified of the lottery results. Deadline to submit completed applications is May 19.
