John Prettyman Sr.

John “Jack” Edward Prettyman Sr., 79, of Holualoa died April 20, 2017, at his residence. Born Oct. 13, 1937, in Chester, Penn., he was a charter boat captain, owner of “Notorious Sportfishing”, a former police officer and a US Army veteran.

A boat farewell will be held 4:30 p.m. May 12 at Honokohau Boat Harbor. Loose flowers welcome. A celebration of life will follow at Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club at Honokohau Boat Harbor. Info: 895-3449. Condolences to the family may be sent to P.O. Box 1018, Kealakekua, Hawaii 96750.

He is survived by wife, Kay Prettyman; sons, John Prettyman Jr., Ty Prettyman, all of Holualoa; daughters, Summer Oliveira of Honolulu, Rain Gaspar of Holualoa; brother, Bill Prettyman of Delaware; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Gaylord Vermilyea

Gaylord George Vermilyea, 74, of Kailua-Kona, died April 24, 2017, in Hawaii. Born Feb. 15, 1943, in Minneapolis, he worked for Hobie Cat and later formed Surfboards and Boats by Gaylord.

A sunrise memorial service and paddle-out will be held at Kahalau Beach at 7 a.m. on May 20.

He is survived by his mother, Evelyn Vermilyea; daughter, Shu-Lin Ruedy; son, David Vermilyea; and six grandchildren all of Kailua-Kona.

Yasuko Nagata

Yasuko Nagata, 91, of Hilo died on April 13, 2017, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in San Fernando, Calif., she was a member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by son, Garry Nagata of Pasadena, Calif.; daughter, Judy (Bruce) Miyashiro of Hilo; sisters, Mitsue Oyama of Pasadena, Calif., Haruko Asari of Seal Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces.

Gerald Allen

Gerald Wayne Allen, 76, of Pahoa died May 3, 2017, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Oct. 6, 1940, in Illinois, he was a supervisor for a puree papaya factory in Hawaii.

He was survived by wife, Mary Allen of Hawaiian Beaches; daughters, Melissa Dunn and Melanie (Takumi) Tamaki of Hawaiian Beaches; son, John Allen of Hawaiian Beaches; three grandchildren; brothers, Richard Allen of St. Charles, Missouri and Robert Allen of Hawaiian Beaches; numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank Santiago

Frank Santiago, 87, of Hawi died April 20, 2017, at Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.Born March 16, 1930, in Halawa, North Kohala, he was an owner of a mom and pop body and fender repair shop and a crane operator for the former Kohala Sugar Company. He was also a member of the Kohala Puerto Rican Association and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi.

Visitation will be held from 8:30-9:45 a.m. May 27 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hawi, with a 10 a.m. Mass. Urn burial will follow at the church cemetery. Casual attire.

He is survived by sons, Frank Santiago of Maui and Steven (Lydia) Santiago of Hilo; sisters, Ramona Pacheco of Hilo and Christine Texeira of Sacramento, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
