Memorial Day, a national holiday to honor those who gave their lives for our country, will be observed on Monday, May 29, at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua-Kona.

The American Legion Kona Post 20 and Auxiliary will lead the ceremony that starts promptly at 11 a.m.

The guest speaker is Command Sgt. Maj. James K. Hussey, U.S. Army (retired) of Kailua-Kona.

Born and riased in Hilo, Hussey has served in a variety of assignments in the United States, Panama, Europe, Middle East and Far East. His last assignment was at Fort Gordon, Georgia, as the U.S. Signal Corps Regimental CSM. He retired in 1994 after over 34 years of service.

Among his decorations are the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, there Meritorious Service Medals, four Army Commendation Medals, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal, Vietnam Honor Medal and Vietnamese Combat Parachutist Badge, the Audie Murphy Medal, Bronze and Silver Order of Mercury Award, and Distinguished Member of the Signal Corps Regiment Award.

Other Veterans service organizations participating Monday’s ceremony include the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 and Auxiliary, Big Island Retired Military Association and Disabled American Veterans.

The public is invited. Hot dogs will be served after the ceremony. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish or dessert to share for a potluck style lunch.
