Claudio Icari

Claudio “Dong” Kazuaki Icari, 84, Hilo died May 19, 2017, at home. Born Oct. 22, 1932, in Pahala an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired as a carpenter foreman from Hawaiian Dredging Co.

Friends may call for visitation from 4:30-6 p.m. June 13 at Dodo Mortuary chapel. A service with military honors will be at 6 p.m. Family requests casual attire flowers and lei to be provided by family only.

He is survived by wife, Teresita Bihag Icari of Hilo; daughter, Sharon (Dennis) Saniatan of Hilo; sons, Reginald (Judy) Elvenia, Orrin (Nadine) Icari, Wendel (Hulali) Icari and Shawn (Michelle) Icari of Hilo; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Anna Shigematsu

Anna Yasuko Shigematsu, 94, of Honokaa died May 29, 2017, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Lahaina, Maui, she was a homemaker and a member of the Honokaa Hongwanji Mission and its Buddhist Women’s Association.

Visitation is from 9:30–10:30 a.m. June 14 at Dodo Mortuary chapel with a 10:30 a.m. memorial service. Casual attire is requested.

She is survived by daughters, Janie (Allan) Karimoto of Hilo, Maurie (Stanley) Inouye of Mililani, Oahu; son, Robert (Charlene) Shigematsu of Clovis, California; sisters, Kikue Yamashita of Kailua-Kona, Asano Matsumoto of Holualoa; brothers, Ross Yuzuru Muta of Pearl City, Oahu, Ichiro (Beverly) Muta of Hawaii Kai; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Marie Soares

Marie Thelma Soares, 90, died April 21, 2017, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born March 17, 1927, in Pahoa, she was a homemaker and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. June 14 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for an 10 a.m. Mass. Inurnment will follow at Homelani Memorial Park in Hilo. Casual attire is requested.

She is survived by sons, Norman (Patricia) Soares of Kailua (Oahu), Carl (Ruby) Soares of Hilo and Chris (Nancy Kunishima) Soares of Aiea, Oahu; daughters, Sharon (John) DeYeso of Kahaluu, Oahu and Cynthia Augustin of Hilo; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces.

Ethel Sasaki

Ethel Yasuyo Sasaki, 92, of Kealakekua died May 13, 2017, at Marites Domingo’s Care Home. Born Nov. 16, 1924, in Yamaguchi, Japan, she was a room maid at the former Kona Surf Resort and a coffee farmer. She was a member of Keauhou Kumiai, Daifukuji Soto Mission and Kona Rissho Kosei Kai.

Private services were held.

She is survived by brothers, Fusao (Masuko) Okamoto and Mitsumasa (Kimiyo) Okamoto, all of Japan; caregiver, Marites Domingo of Kealakekua; numerous nieces and nephews.
