WAIMEA — North Hawaii community members from Waimea, Paauilo, Honokaa, Kohala and Waikoloa will unite to fight cancer with a fundraiser to create cancer awareness and educate everyone on the disease from noon–10 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Waimea Ball Park.
Known as Relay for Life North Hawaii, families, businesses, organizations and sports teams are encouraged to form a team and support the cause. Cancer survivors and caregivers will be honored at the event and are also encouraged to participate.
The day-long community celebration features individuals and teams as they camp out, picnic, dance, play games and take turns circling around a track “relay” style to raise funds and fight cancer. The event opens as cancer survivors lead a Survivor Lap around the track.
As the sun begins to set, the warm glow of hundreds of luminaria light the field in an emotional silent ceremony. Each bag lit is in honor of a loved one who won the fight against cancer or in remembrance of a special someone who lost their battle. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope in that those lost to cancer will not be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one, day cancer will be eliminated.
Money raised will fight cancer by helping people stay well and get well, and by finding cures. A major portion of the proceeds will benefit the Hope Lodge, located on Oahu. The lodge assists cancer patients and caregivers from outer islands. Between November 2016 and March, 66 percent of the Hope Lodge patients were from the Big Island.
Started in 1985, Relay For Life began with one man who circled around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000. This year, Relay For Life has grown to more than 5,200 communities and more than 25 countries worldwide.
