LFA training offered today

Little fire ant training will be offered for free to yard care personnel today in Kainaliu.

The training, which gets underway at 3 p.m., will cover the signs of an infestation, how to choose the right products and maximize bait treatment, and how to prevent the spread of the pest to other areas.

Hosted by the Big Island Invasive Species Council, the training will be offered at the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Kona Extension Office off Mamalahoa Highway in Kainaliu.

Blue Zones Project kickoff Saturday

Blue Zones Project will hold its West Hawaii Kickoff event Saturday in Kailua-Kona.

Bring the ohana down to Kona Commons from 1:30-5:30 p.m. to celebrate Hawaii becoming the first county in the nation to be designated a Blue Zones Demonstration Site. The free event will feature National Geographic Explorer and New York Times bestselling author of “The Blue Zones” and “The Blue Zones Solution” Dan Buettner, as well as entertainment, food samples, activities, prizes, giveaways and more.

Diana Duff to discuss drought-tolerant plants

Diana Duff and special guests will present information about plants that can thrive with very little water in a xeriscape garden on Saturday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.

During the presentation, which starts at 10 a.m., attendees will learn about cacti and succulent species.

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona with the Community Seed Library, this program is free to the public.

Retired military association holds luncheon

The Big Island Retired Military Association holds its luncheon at noon on Saturday in Kailua-Kona.

All retired military and spouses are welcome. BIRMA organizes activities and community service events for members. Lunch is $10 and will be followed by a coffee farm tour.

Disability legislative forum slated

The West Hawaii Development Disabilities Committee invites the public to meet state and county officials along with support organizations for the second annual West Hawaii Disability Legislative Forum. The free event will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Old Kona Airport Park’s Makaeo Events Pavilion.

The open format allows for policymakers to answer questions about disability-related issues such as employment, housing, transportation, etc. Provider Agencies and related organizations will prepare booths with information on many available services.
