Hawaii Fire Department reported a 2 p.m. today a large brush fire located in the area of Kaalualu near South Point, in Ka’u.

There are no roadway closures at this time, but motorist should be on the lookout for emergency vehicles. Smoke from the fire may affect visibility for driving and air quality for adjacent communities.

The fire is makai of Naalehu town and traveling northwest along the shoreline. It is not contained at this time and there is no estimation as to its size.

Fire officials say there is no immediate threat to the public at this time. Persons are requested to stay out of the active fire area.
