WAIMEA — In celebration of Manufacturing Day 2017, the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope will open its doors Oct. 6 to more than 100 students from across the Big Island and the community as part of an effort to showcase the diverse manufacturing that occurs on the Big Island and draw attention to the outstanding opportunities that a career in manufacturing can provide.

Planned activities include tours of the CFHT machine shop, demonstrations and displays from other manufactures in the community.

Manufacturing Day is an annual national event executed at the local level, supported by thousands of manufacturers as they host students, teachers, parents, job seekers and other local community members at open houses, plant tours and presentations designed to showcase modern manufacturing technology and careers.

Schools are invited to attend one of three morning sessions at CFHT between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., the doors will open to the general public for an experience similar to the students’.

CFHT will also host a design contest for attendees with the prize of a brand new GoPro with 32GB memory card to the best design on Fusion 360. Fusion 360 is a free software that can be downloaded at https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/students-teachers-educators. Interested participants should bring their design on a memory stick to the event. CFHT staff will judge the contest and award the Go Pro to the winner.

“There is an increasing demand for highly skilled professionals in the manufacturing sector who can design, program and operate technology,” Greg Green said, CFHT’s machinist. “We want to open our doors to the community, especially students, to show them the opportunities for these careers exist across Hawaii Island.”

Schools or individuals interested in participating should register on the official Manufacturing Day webpage at http://www.mfgday.com/events/2017/canada-france-hawaii-telescope-corp.
