West Hawaii Artists Tribe hosts exhibit

West Hawaii Artists Tribe, in conjunction with Aloha Performing Arts Company, presents an art event this weekend at Aloha Theatre’s Damron Hall in Kainaliu.

The free event opens at 5 p.m. this evening with two hours of art and music. It continues from noon-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

West Hawaii Artists Tribe is a group of artists challenging themselves and each other to push the boundaries of their varied art forms, and encourage experimentation and expansion. The show will include work in photography, painting, sculpture, assemblage, mosaic glass, printmaking and clay.

Participating artists are Kathleen Dunphy, Melany Kerver, Kathleen Carr, Peter Underwood, Jean Kingsley Love, Leslie Steinwachs, Michele Iacobucci and Joyce Monsky.

Book character pumpkin decorating contest starts Tuesday

The Kailua-Kona Public Library is holding a book character pumpkin decorating contest that gets underway Tuesday and runs through Oct. 31.

The contest is divided into divisions and by age group. The children’s divisions comprise kindergarten through second grade students and third- to fifth-grade students. The teen divisions comprise sixth- through eighth-grade students and ninth- through 12th-grade students.

Stop by the Children’s Section and/or the Teen Section beginning Tuesday through Oct. 25 to pick up contest rules and an entry form.

Entries may be dropped off at the library between Oct. 19 and 25.

Public and staff voting will take place Oct. 26-31. Winnersm who will receive prizes, will be notified on Nov. 1.

Classes & workshops

Beading workshop series planned

Terry Robson will lead a beading workshop on Thursday at the Society for Kona’s Education and Art in Honaunau.

From 1-4 p.m., attendees will learn basic peyote and netting techniques by beading over a miniature glass bottle.

The next classes in this series are French flower beading on Nov. 2 and beaded ornament making on Dec. 14. Cost is $30 for SKEA members and $35 for nonmembers. SKEA is located at 84-5191 Mamalahoa Hwy in Honaunau.

Library to screen ‘Captain Underpants’

The Kealakekua Public Library will offer a free showing of “Captain Underpants” at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

The PG-rated film features George Beard and Harold Hutchins, two overly imaginative pranksters who spend hours in a tree house creating comic books. When their mean principal threatens to separate them into different classes, the mischievous boys accidentally hypnotize him into thinking that he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

Free popcorn available while supplies last. Beverages in closed containers are allowed. Young children must be accompanied by an adult.

Hilton planning Oktoberfest Party

Hilton Waikoloa Village’s inaugural Oktoberfest Party has been set for Oct. 7 at the South Kohala resort.

From 6-9 p.m. at Hilton Waikoloa Village’s Kamehameha Court, this folk-tastic party will be showcasing 8-10 Bavarian beer “garten” brews and the resort’s culinary team will be presenting an array of scratch-made authentic German food to complement the beverages.

Live musical performances hosted by KAPA’s Jaz and Kaea, and a polka dance contest will round out the entertainment. Dance contest winners will receive prizes.

General admission tickets are $79, teen tickets are $49, and children tickets (5-12 years) are $35. Keiki younger than age 4 enter free. VIP tickets are an additional $20. Ticket prices are exclusive of taxes and 14 percent gratuity.

General admission ticketholders get access to German food stations, three beer tastings and complimentary self parking. VIP ticketholders receive seating close to the stage, a glass of special VIP-only beer by Big Island Brewhaus, in addition to the general admission offerings, special VIP appetizers and a collectible souvenir glass to take home.

Film screenings

‘The African Queen’ to be shown

Kahilu Theatre hosts a screening of the classic film “The African Queen” at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The 1951 film, written and directed by John Huston, stars Humphrey Bogart. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online.

‘Hare Krishna!’ screens Thursday

“Hare Krishna!” a 90-minute documentary on the life of Srila Prabhupada, the 70-year-old Indian Swami who arrived in America without support or money in the turbulent 1960s, will be screened on Thursday at Makalapua Stadium 10 in Kailua-Kona.

The film, released this year, explores how he ignited the worldwide cultural revolution of spiritual consciousness, known as the Hare Krishna movement, a Bhakti movement.

Tickets are $11.50 and must be purchased at http://gathr.us/screening/20476. The film will be screened at 7:30 p.m.
