Kailua Village Artists plan reception
The Kailua Village Artists invite the public to their “All Member Artists Valentine’s Reception” 5-7 p.m. Friday at the gallery in the Kona Marketplace in Kailua-Kona.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet all the member artists of KVA and enjoy live entertainment, cake and refreshments.
The gallery is located at 75-5729 Alii Drive, Ste. C-110, in the Kona Marketplace in Kailua-Kona. It gallery is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

Kahilu Theatre presents Makana
After two sold-out shows last season, Makana returns to the Kahilu Theatre stage for two evenings of stories and songs next weekend. Shows are at 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday in Waimea. The performances also celebrate Makana turning 40 years old.
Makana, whose name means “a gift given freely,” began singing when he was 7 years old, took up ukulele at 9 and began learning the distinctive art of slack key guitar at 11. By 14, he was performing professionally, and has never looked back. The internationally renowned musician is considered to be one of the greatest-living guitar players today and his reputation as one of the youngest virtuosos of Hawaiian slack key guitar.

Tiffany’s Art Agency plans reception
Tiffany’s Art Agency hosts a collectors reception featuring Timothy Allen Shafto 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the gallery in Hawi.
An award-winning furniture maker and woodturner, Shafto’s latest body of work, combining Hawaiian koa wood with “colorflow” abstract painting, has quickly gained him notoriety and praise. All of his previous skill sets are obvious in his creations — from their integral koa, or sapele frames, to their smooth finish.
His work can be found in private collections across the globe.

Kahulanui to play Valentine’s Day show
The Lions Club of Kona Community Foundation present an evening of romance and dance with Grammy and Hoku Hanohano Award-nominated Hawaiian swing band Kahulanui on Valentine’s Day, which is Wednesday.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6:30 show at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel in Kailua-Kona. Proceeds will benefit the Kona community through the Lion’s Club of Kona and the Lion’s Club of Kona Community Foundation.
The evening will include a no-host bar, silent auction, games and giveaways at the hotel’s courtyard overlooking the ocean.
Tickets are $75 in advance, $80 at the door. VIP tables for parties of up to 10 are $1,200. They can be purchased online at www.kahulanui.com or at Soundwave Music, 74-5599 Luhia St. The first 200 tickets sold will include a Mele Hooilina preview CD.

Sand art workshop Saturday
The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery hosts its free monthly workshop on Saturday with Teresea Boswell leading a Valentine’s Sand Art class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the gallery in the Keauhou Shopping Center.
Space is limited to 20 people. Adults and children, ages 8 and up are welcome; minor children must be attended by an adult. Stop by or call the gallery to sign up. A suggested donation for materials will be accepted.
The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Parent/child craft workshop Saturday
Laurel Schultz leads a parent/child workshop Saturday at the Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa.
The class, “My Blue Valentine,” will give participants a chance to explore the magic of photography and create unique cards or images to celebrate Valentine’s Day or simply to play. Participants will be exploring the action of light and shadow using opaque or translucent objects to create photograph images on sensitized paper.
Participants are encouraged to bring treasures from their own garden or gently harvest from the DMAC garden and create something beautiful for their loved ones. Any object that makes a shadow can create a unique cyanotype.
The 10 a.m. to noon workshop is open to keiki ages 6 and up; all participants under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $10 per person.
Schultz, a Big Island resident, is a photographer and multimedia artist whose work explores fragments and figments of the natural world as a lens on human nature. Her work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. She has taught photography at the University of Washington, the Photographic Center Northwest and, more recently, the Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa.

Auditions set for ‘Spring Awakening’
Auditions for Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s Tony Award-winning musical, “Spring Awakening,” will be held on Feb. 16 and 23 at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea.
The Feb. 16 auditions take place from 3-6:45 p.m. while the Feb. 23 auditions will run 3-8 p.m.
This story explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood and touches on several sensitive coming-of-age subjects, relevant especially today. Participants and legal guardians are asked to review the subject matter of the show before the auditions.
Director Beth Dunnington is looking for 11 performers — five females and six males — in their teens (ninth grade and up) and early to mid-20, to play teenagers aged 14 to 18; and two performers, aged 20 to 40, one female, and one male, to play multiple nonsinging roles.
Those interested in auditioning are asked to bring a theatrical resume and to come prepared both vocally and physically. Part of the audition will require participants to learn and perform choreography. No monologue preparation is necessary as all actors will be provided with script
