Hawaii Fire Department personnel on Monday located a 75-year-old under a cliff overhang in Puna.

Hawaii Police Department officers requested the department’s help locating the man who had been reported missing along the shoreline fronting Hawaiian Paradise Park, according to the fire department, which responded at 11:39 a.m. Monday.

While ground units searched the area of the man’s last known location, the department’s helicopter spotted him under a cliff overhang. The cliffs were reportedly 15 to 25 feet high along the shoreline.

The man extricated by a rescue swimmer and then lifted from the ocean to a nearby medic for treatment.

The man was transported with “trauma to his head” via medics to Hilo Medical Center.

No additional information was available on the man’s condition.
