Police arrest 28 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 26 and Sunday. Three of those drivers were involved in a traffic crash and three were younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested 14 motorists while South Hilo officers arrested five and South Kohala officers arrested four, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Puna and Ka‘u officers arrested two motorists in each district while North Kohala officers arrested one.

So far this year, there have been 282 DUI arrests compared with 313 during the same period last year, according to police.

Through Monday, there have been seven deaths on Big Island public roads compared with seven fatalities at this time last last year.
