E Mau Na Ala Hele, The Ala Kahakai Trail Association and The National Park Service are sponsoring a free ‘walk and talk’ event this Sunday in North Kohala to celebrate National Trails Day.

Open to the public, participants will meet at Kapaa County Park on Akoni Pule Highway 270, just past the 16 mile marker heading toward Hawi, at 8:45 a.m. to carpool to Lapakahi State Park. The group will walk north to Kapaa for lunch, to relax and enjoy the views. Interpretive guides will share their knowledge of the area’s history and culture along the way.

Wear sturdy trail shoes or boots and be prepared for sun and heat. The hike is 3 miles over boulders, beach cobbles, old railway beds and some easy trails. Bring two liters of water to stay hydrated.

RSVP is required. Email Chris at hawkins@alakahakaitrail.org or call 494-7116.
