KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim has signed a mandatory evacuation order for all civilians in the area of the Leilani Estates subdivision because of the ongoing eruption along the lower East Rift Zone.

The mandatory evacuation goes into effect at noon today for subdivision area east of Pomaikai Street.Civilians within the evacuation area must leave the area within 24 hours.

The proclamation, issued Thursday morning, states that those who remain within the mandatory evacuation area after that time do so their at their own risk and acknowledge that emergency personnel may not respond. They are also subject to arrest and liability for any recovery costs associated with rescue operations within the mandatory evacuation area.
