New traffic signal goes active July 17 on Queen Kaahumanu Highway

KAILUA-KONA — A new traffic signal will now be activated at 9 a.m. July 17 at Queen Kaahumanu Highway intersection with the entrance to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park.

The state Department of Transportation said that the traffic signal start flashing yellow at 9 a.m. Monday to transition motorists to the new signal, which will control the flow of traffic along the Queen Kaahumanu Highway as well as traffic headed to the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and the Lanihau Properties Business Park. The department had previously stated the signal would go active on Thursday.

The most recent work on Phase 2 of the highway’s widening includes completion of striping and installing pavement markers on all northbound lanes; completion intersections at Kealakehe Parkway, Kaiminani Drive and Keahole Airport Road with asphalt paving, striping and pavement markers, according to an update posted to the project website, www.buildqueenk.com.

Upcoming work includes installing a traffic signal system; landscaping; striping and installing pavement markers on all southbound lanes; and top lift asphalt paving on southbound lanes. The paving is expected to continue for the next several weeks.

The 5-mile highway widening project is expected to be completed in November. It is currently considered 89 percent complete, according to the transportation department. Thus far, the project has cost $128.1 million.
