KAILUA-KONA — State and county law enforcement officials confirmed Tuesday that helicopter searches for marijuana have taken place over the last week on Hawaii Island.

The mission included efforts on Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday, Hawaii Police Maj. Robert Wagner said. It covered the Hamakua, Waimea, Ka’u and Kona districts.

He said a “few” HPD officers were involved in the mission, which was being led by the state Department of Public Safety’s Narcotics Enforcement Division.

Toni Schwartz, public information officer for the department, Tuesday afternoon confirmed the division’s involvement in “an eradication operation on the Big Island.”

Details on the number of plants confiscated or any arrests in connection with the mission will not provided “until final reports are completed,” she said.
