KAILUA-KONA — A new evidence drying cabinet is being sought for the Hawaii Police Department’s Kona Police Station.
A request for quotes for a Sirchie Drysafe Forensic Evidence Drying Cabinet with replacement filters was posted by the county Purchasing Division on July 18.
Bids, which must include taxes and the cost of shipping the equipment to the police station in Kailua-Kona, are due Thursday.
No estimated price is included in the request, however, it does note that the unit price “shall not exceed 4 decimal places.”
Sirchie on its website priced the 7-foot cabinet that measures 36 inches in length and 28 inches in width at $6,600.
The move to secure the drying cabinet follows a West Hawaii Today article published in June that brought to light instances in which evidence in two high-profile criminal cases was apparently snatched by a rodent while it was drying in an outdoor evidence locker behind the Kona Police Station.
At the time of the article’s publication, police said the station didn’t currently have indoor equipment to dry wet evidence.
