‘The Hobbit’ premieres this weekend at Kahilu
Waimea Community Theatre opens ‘The Hobbit’ at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea on Friday.
Directed by Rich Givens, performances are scheduled this weekend for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available through the Kahilu Box Office, and can be purchased online at kahilutheatre.org or at waimeacommunitytheatre.org.
Prices are $30/$25/$20, with a discount for children 12 and under.

Learn lauhala weaving at the Volcano Art Center
Learn the art of lauhala weaving in this fun, hands-on workshop with Jelena Clay on from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Volcano Art Center. You’ll be able to create your own bracelet and pair of earrings using this traditional Hawaiian method of weaving.
Topics covered in the workshop include collecting, prepping and stripping of lauhala. During the morning session of class, students will create their own lauhala bracelet. This simple project is a great introduction to lauhala weaving. During the afternoon session, students will then create a pair of earrings. All of the findings and tools along with sterling silver ear wires will be provided. Simple stones and crystals will be available to embellish the earrings.

Jelena Clay is a master fiber artist and nationally recognized gourd artist who has produced an ever-increasing variety of contemporary and traditional work in every natural fiber she can find. Her interest in all Hawaiian art forms naturally led her to lauhala.

Improv workout Saturday at Aloha Theatre
On Saturday, join “On the Spot Improv” artistic director and “Improvaganza Hawaii” executive producer Garrick Paikai as he demonstrates how to take improv and create what seems to be a fully-produced show in his workout titled “Play Within A Play.”
“Play Within A Play” is all about making an improv show with the illusion of looking like a fully scripted and directed play. This intensive, five hour “workout” demonstrates the methods and the techniques of how a collective group of improvisers can instantly create an improvised narrative play and believable characters with back stories while making it look like it came from the mind of a director and playwright. These methods are inspiring and thought-provoking ways to play with others within a play.
Breaks will be provided. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring a water bottle. Participants should be 16 and over. Registration is open on the Aloha Theatre’s website.

Aloha Theatre holding auditions for ‘The Addams Family’
If dressing up as a spooky character for Halloween is your thing, you might have the ultimate chance — by auditioning for the Aloha Theatre’s upcoming production of the Broadway musical “The Addams Family.” All roles are available, and auditions will be held at the theatre at 6 p.m. on Aug. 6 and 7, with a possible invitational callback audition at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
The Aloha Theatre continues its tradition of top-rate seasonal shows with this musical version of “The Addams Family,” by Andrew Lippa, Marshall Brickman, and Rick Elice. Characters in the show include the familiar Charles Addams classics: Morticia, Gomez, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch, as well as new outsiders Mal, Alice, and Lucas Beineke. In addition to named characters, an ensemble of at least ten singer/dancer/actors is also required, as The Ancestors, who are vital to the plot and appear in nearly every scene.
Scores and scripts are available for perusal at the Aloha Theatre office, please call or email the office in advance. Each person auditioning must prepare 16 bars, or about one minute, of a song. Sheet music will be available for songs from “The Addams Family,” and an accompanist will be provided. If a song from another source is chosen, the candidate must provide the accompanist with sheet music in the proper key. No acapella or karaoke-style auditions will be permitted. Candidates should also prepare a one-minute humorous monologue (memorization preferred), and anticipate learning a short movement routine in a group. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required, no slippers. Candidates will be seen in small groups, in order of arrival. Attendance at one of the audition nights is sufficient; attending both nights is not necessary.
Aloha Theatre’s production of “The Addams Family” is directed by Jerry Tracy, with musical direction by Bernaldo Evangelista, vocal direction by Marinella Savarese and choreography by Rexanne Ring. Rehearsals begin Monday, Aug. 13, and will generally be conducted Monday through Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Specific time commitment varies, depending on the role. The show runs for three weekends, performing on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons, October 12-28. While not all cast members will be required at every rehearsal, candidates must be available for the entire rehearsal schedule with a minimum number of conflicts and must commit to the entire performance run. In addition to performers, support staff is also sought, including stage-hands, hair, makeup and wardrobe helpers, seamstresses, builders, painters, concession workers and ushers. Waimea Community Theatre holding auditions for ‘Dracula’
Waimea Community Theatre will be hosting auditions for ‘Dracula,’ directed by James Little, at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 13 and 14. The auditions will be held at the Waimea Community Theatre office, behind Five Mountain Fitness.
The theatre is looking for six women, six men and one teenager to fill the roles. The show will run Oct. 12-28.

30th annual Trash Show calling
East Hawaii Cultural Center announces its call for artists for the 30th annual Trash Show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 29
“Once again, artists are in the vanguard of public awareness. I believe they were among the first to experiment with recycling on a personal level. (Art supplies can be expensive.) With this in mind, I invite Big Island artists and outsider artists to enter up to three pieces for this juried exhibit. I will select works best representing the concept of art from trash. Originality, creativity and craftsmanship count. Large, three dimensional pieces are encouraged,” Ira Ono said in a press release.
