Don’s dogs

Don and Carole Zero have been going to PTA monthly and making good on the $10,000 commitment last year from their Charitable Fund, providing chili dogs for the troops.

While the Zeros are normally present on Sundays, USO Center manager Jodi Brissette asked to them to instead serve during the week in support of RIMPAC. Along with Jeff Wombolt, they served 300 chili dogs and 160 chili cheese nachos with all the fixings. Members of the US Army, Marines and Navy — along with those from Australia, Japan, Tonga and Indonesia — got a taste of a home picnic.

Not only do Don and Carole cook and serve the chili dogs, but since the USO is not funded by the government and only through donations, they also buy the 300 dogs, 300 buns, six large chili cans, shredded cheese, onions, jalapenos and more themselves.

Don and Carole say it is refreshing to see the acceptance and courtesy extended by those in uniform for a change from the mess hall and a simple chili dog. They say it is rewarding and is their thanks to those who serve our nation.
