Louise Isherwood

Louise Byron Isherwood, 78, of Hilo, died July 20, 2018, at her home. Born in Milton, Louisiana, she was a retired Department of Education English teacher, member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Family &friends may call 9-10 a.m. Aug. 7 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou; funeral mass at 10. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No.2. Aloha/business attire requested. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Louise Isherwood may be made to either the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Lyman Museum or a charity of your choice.

She is survived by husband, Myron Isherwood, Jr. of Hilo; daughters, Pamela (George) Kruse of Kalaheo, Kauai, Kathleen (Glenn Ohashi) Isherwood of Hilo, Gaylen “Lani” (Ernie Costa, Jr.) Isherwood of Waikele, Oahu, Gwendolyn (Pao-Chi Hwang) Isherwood of Honolulu, Francene (Ken) Depew of Ewa Beach, Oahu; brothers, Patrick Byron of Mississippi, John (Belle) Byron of Texas; sister, Mary (James) Eubank of Louisiana; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Natividad Ellazar

Natividad “Naty” Dacanay Ellazar, 84, of Keaau, died July 13, 2018, at the Life Care Center of Hilo. She was born in Lupao, Nueva Ecija, the Philippines and was a retired papaya packer and grader with Tropical Hawaiian products.

Private services were held.

She is survived by her sons, Marcos (Jodi) Ellazar of Hilo, Marcial (Susan) Ellizar of Charlotte, N.C., Romulo (Maribel) Ellazar of Apple Valley, Calif. and Igmedio (Estela) Ellazar of Keaau; daughter, Emerita “Emmy” (Samson) Ellazar-Hernandez of Keaau; brother, Lopez Dacanay of the Philippines; 10 grandchildren, six great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Hatsuko Shiraishi

Hatsuko Shiraishi, 89, of Captain Cook, died June 26, 2018, at home. Born in Kealakekua, she was a coffee farmer, a retired housekeeper for the former Kona Surf Resort and a member of Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple.

Private service to be held.

She is survived by daughters, Coleen Mitchell of Kailua-Kona, Ilyn (Wesley) Ferreira of Hilo; son, Jay Nonaka of Captain Cook; a brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, four grandsons, six great-grandsons, a great-great-grandson, numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles Mitchell

Charles Clifford Kealohilani Mitchell, 70, of Kailua-Kona, died June 12, 2018, at his residence. Born on May 14, 1948, in Kealakekua, he was a U.S. Army retiree, a merchandise receiver for Walmart in Kailua-Kona and a security officer for Wachenhut at the Ellison Onizuka International Airport.

A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Big Game Fishing Clubhouse at the Honokohau Harbor in Kailua-Kona. Scattering of his ashes will be held at a later date. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.

He is survived by his wife, Coleen Mitchell of Kailua-Kona; sons, Patrick (Chrissy) Malone of North Carolina, Coogan (Regina) Mitchell, Donny (Faith) Andrade, Brian Andrade, all of Kailua-Kona, Kawika (Billie) Mitchell of Florida; daughters, Sophie (Ordie) Conrad-Mitchell of Ocala, Florida, Michelle Mills-Mitchell and Venus Mitchell of Florida; brother, Albert Mitchell of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Nora Hao, Patty Mitchell, Doreen (Lawrence) Mills, Juliette (Allen) Lucena, and Vivian (Matthew) Kaili, all of Kailua-Kona; 23 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

George Wakefield-Rael

George “Chi” Joseph Wakefield-Rael, 73, of Captain Cook, died July 11, 2018, at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale. Born in San Francisco, California on June 9, 1945, he was a hair stylist, barber and a chen gar tai chi instructor. He performed stage shows for hair guru, Paul Mitchell. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran honored by Mayor Harry Kim and Gov. David Ige.

A mass will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 11 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona and celebration of life will be held at another date.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Wakefield-Rael of Captain Cook; brothers, Randy Rael of Redwood City, Calif. and Leo (Maria) Rael of Concord, Calif; sisters, Virginia Rael of San Francisco, Calif., Linda (Jerry) Wolfert of Charleston, SC; mother-in-law, Beverly Wakefield of Honalo; sisters-in-law, Susan (Reggie) David and Amy (Steven) Wakefield-McDonald, of Kailua-Kona; brother-in-law, Bill (Brooks) Wakefield of Kailua-Kona; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces, grandnephews and may friends.

Faith Fernandez

Faith Evalani Fernandez, 69, of Hilo died July 13, 2018, at her residence. Born in Kapoho, she was a retired cashier and cook at K’s Drive In.

Friends may call 5-6 p.m. Aug. 8 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel; a celebration of her life will begin at 6 p.m. The family requests casual attire.

She is survived by son, Randall (Lilia) Fernandez of Hilo; two grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Noah Chong

Noah “Bradda” Paulaula Chong, Jr., 47, of Kahaluu Mauka, died July 9, 2018, at his residence. Born in Kealakekua, on June 17, 1971, he was a truck driver.

Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Aug. 11 at Kona Faith Center in Captain Cook and a celebration of life will follow at 10 a.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flower lei.

He is survived by his mother, Agnes Chong Kihara of Kahaluu Mauka; brothers, Steven (Sara) Chong of Ewa Beach, Oahu and Conrad O. (Davlyn Pua) Chong of Kahaluu Mauka; sister, Nova M. Chong of Kahaluu Mauka; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arie Gildener

Arie Gildener, 75, of South Kona, died on July 23, 2018, from natural causes.

A memorial will be held from 3-6 p.m. at Pu’uHonua Park.

He is survived by his wife Michele; his children Aaron, Suzanne, Hannah and Allan; his brother Eldad; nine grandchildren.

Dennis Ibanez

Dennis “Kuchi” Kanani Ibanez, Sr., 64, of Hilo, died July 21, 2018, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a chef and U.S. Army Vietnam war veteran.

Private services were held.

He is survived by wife, Lori Ann Ibanez; sons, Dennis (Shaylynn) Ibanez, Jr., Kimo (Korrie) Ibanez, Sr.; daughters, Toni (Jon) Salboro, Chassity Yamamoto, Alyn Yamamoto; sister, Rowena Noriega; 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Trent Fujii

Trent Toshio Fujii, 33, of Kapaau, Kohala died July 13, 2018, at the Kohala Hospital. Born in Hilo, he was a former landscaper.

Friends may call 9-10 a.m. Aug. 11 at the St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Kapaau; a memorial mass will begin at 10. The family requests casual attire.

He is survived by parents, Clifford &Sheila Fujii of Kapaau; sister, Tracy Fujii of Kapaau; paternal grandmother, Helen Fujii of Kapaau; maternal grandmother, Josephine Baculpo of Kapaau; one nephew and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.

Erlinda Navalta

Erlinda Fernandez Navalta, 81, of Mililani, and formerly of Laupahoehoe, died July 24, 2018, at the Wahiawa Long Term Nursing Home on Oahu. Born in Dagupan City, Philippines, she was a homemaker and seamstress, member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Laupahoehoe and Laupahoehoe Senior Citizens Group.

Visitation will take place from 9-10 a.m. Aug. 10 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo; funeral mass at 10:30. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. The family requests casual attire.

She is survived by daughters, Nida (Al) Padilla of California, Nanette (Paul) Nehls of Michigan, Jennifer (Mike) Betz of Mililani; son, Wendell (Paige) Navalta of Maryland; sisters, Perla Ortal of Kauai, Norma Fernandez of Kauai, Virginia Fernandez of Kauai; brother, Cesar Fernandez of Kauai; 10 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Shigeyasu Oda

Shigeyasu Russell “Russ” Oda, age 89 of Hilo, died July 17, 2018, at his residence in Hilo. He was born in Hilo on June 30, 1929, he was a retired architect, Korean war veteran and captain in the U.S. Army.

Visitation will be held at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo from 8:30-10 a.m. Aug. 11. Memorial Service will begin at 10 a.m. Casual attire is requested.

He is survived by wife, Akiko Oda of Hilo; daughter, Rosanne (Randall Ching) Oda-Ching of Aiea; sisters, Akiko Sadamoto of Hilo and Hatsumi “Candi” Arita of Honolulu; sisters-in-law, Mari Korematsu of Atherton, California and Carol Oda of Hilo; grandsons, Riley Ching of Aiea and Reese Ching of Aiea; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Gerald Wahinekapu

Gerald “Kaleo” Lee Kaleolani Wahinekapu, 45, of Kailua-Kona, died July 16, 2018, at Kona Community Hospital. Born February 20, 1973, in Kealakekua, he was a warehouse coordinator for Tile Warehouse, Inc., a former airport porter and member of Lanakila Congregational Church.

Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. Aug. 18 at Lanakila Congregational Church. Service at 10:30 a.m. Paina to follow. For information call 325-7660.

He is survived by father, Gerald (Sheri) Wahinekapu of Kailua-Kona; sister, Anjeanette (George Leslie) Wahinekapu of Keaau; hanai siblings, Eric Rivera and Tracy Rivera both of Kailua-Kona; hanai sons, Jordan (Ashley Davis) Salsis of Ninole, Jonathan (Kawai) Ka of Kalaoa; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
