Canoe club hosts 24th luau
Kawaihae Canoe Club is hosting its 24th annual luau on Nov. 17 at the Kawaihae Canoe Club site.
Enjoy an outdoor luau with authentic food and great Hawaiian entertainment under the stars. Hoku’s Trio Traditions Hawaii, Kumu Pele Kaio and Halau Unula, Tihati Productions and KOLEA.
Presale adult tickets are $40 and child tickets are $15 (ages 5-10). Gate opens at 5 p.m. and dinner starts at 6 p.m.

Women’s organization offering scholarships
The RISE Project, a nonprofit organization committed to helping women overcome adversity and find resilience through education and self-development, is accepting scholarship applications to be awarded next spring.
Applications are available on the organization’s website theriseprojecthawaii.com with the deadline to submit by Feb. 15. A recipient will be selected in March 2019 for a $500 scholarship. Submitted applications will also automatically renew and be considered in the following award year.
“We aim to create a tight-knit community of resilient and empowered women while providing the tools and mentorship to move through challenges in all phases of life,” said Noella Callejo, Founder and Executive Director of The RISE Project.
The organization also collaborates with local businesses to host events for women that offer personal development forums.

HWLF application date extended
Hawaii Women’s Legal Foundation announced that it is accepting applications for its 2018 grant program from organizations and projects that help to improve the legal status and welfare of women and children in Hawaii.
HWLF considers grant applications twice a year in April and October. The deadline for receipt of grant applications for consideration this cycle has been extended to Friday.
OHA pilot grant looking for recipients
OHA will host two orientation sessions in West Hawaii on Friday for its new $500,000 pilot grants program, which will offer smaller, one-year funding awards for projects that benefit the Native Hawaiian community.
The West Hawaii meetings are part of a set of 18 orientation sessions that OHA will host statewide throughout October for its Kūlia Grants Program, for which the agency is currently accepting applications.
OHA’s Community Grants Program typically provides larger, multi-year grant awards that require a minimum of 20 percent matching funds.
Eligible nonprofit organizations must submit applications by 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16. Applications are only available online.
Applicants are required to attend a Kulia Grants orientation session to be eligible. Registration for the mandatory orientation sessions is required.
West Hawaii Kulia Grants orientations: 9 a.m. Friday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority, Hale Iako Room, 73-970 Makako Bay Dr.; and 1:30 p.m. Friday at Tutu’s House – Friends of the Future, 64-1032 Mamalahoa Hwy #305 in Waimea.
