Correcting the op-ed record
A commentary published recently in The Garden Island and West Hawaii Today written by Amy Perruso, a social studies teacher at Mililani High School, erroneously stated that the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii “is pushing for a con con (Constitutional Convention).”
The Grassroot Institute has not taken a position on the proposed Constitutional Convention, slated to go before Hawaii voters Nov. 6.
The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii is an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and educational institution devoted to promoting individual liberty, economic freedom and accountable government.

Removal program not a success
What are they talking about on Oct. 8? The abandon vehicle programs are not a success, not when irresponsible people dump their cars and trucks on the public or private roadways and expect the local government to tow it away.
Look, each year I pay $12, included in my county fee for vehicle removal. I wouldn’t object if I could drop my vehicle by the side of the road and expect others to tow it. But that’s not how the county thinks. We’ll collect a fee from every car, truck, SUV and trailer registered and then remove only those vehicles that are dumped, all while turning a blind eye to the illegal practice of the owners.
Doesn’t this county have some regulation about littering? And how is the abandoning of a vehicle any different from dumping garbage by the side of the road? Talk about taking care of the land — it’s only talk.
