At 7 p.m. this Wednesday, Pieter Van Dokkum, Yale University’s divisional director of physical sciences and engineering, will give a free talk open to the public titled “Dragonflies, Dark Matter and the Hunt for Ghostly Galaxies” at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Gates Performing Arts Center.
Dragonfly is a small telescope in New Mexico that has found an entirely new class of galaxies as large as the Milky Way, but have 100-1000 times fewer stars. They are so diffuse that it’s possible to see right through them. They look unlike any other galaxies. This talk will discuss these developments and what may be learned in the future.
