Police arrest 23 for suspected DUI

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Dec. 3 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Kona officers arrested 11 drivers while officers in Puna arrested seven drivers, according to data released Wednesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala nabbed three motorists while South Hilo officers arrested two.

So far this year, there have been 1,020 DUI arrests compared with 1,085 during the same period last year, according to police.

Police said there have been 29 deaths on Big Island public roadways so far this year, down 10 percent from the point in 2017 when 32 lives had been lost.
