Philip Howard holding concert to celebrate new album

International composer and pianist Philip Howard is performing at the Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden to celebrate the release of his debut album “Connected.”

“I invite you on a journey that encourages dreams and feelings we might have lost touch with, and our hearts to be fearless to reveal the hidden,” Howard said in a press release.

The inspiration to one of his compositions, “Kainalu,” was the birth of the child of a dear local family. “As the middle section of this piece developed, it presented itself as the journey of a wave. Kainalu is Hawaiian for ocean wave.” Reno Kainalu was born in Kona 103 years to the day after the birth of his great-grandfather and namesake, Reno.

The solo piano concert takes place at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden in Kailua-Kona. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.
