KAILUA-KONA — A man was hospitalized Thursday after being thrown from ATV on land off Kohala Mountain Road, also known as Highway 250.

Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel responded to the 12:13 p.m. report to learn that the man had been riding an all-terrain vehicle when he was thrown off the vehicle approximately 2 miles above the highway. The department noted the area was accessible only by 4×4 vehicles.

When personnel arrived at the scene, they determined the man needed to be extricated from the area by a helicopter and taken directly to North Hawaii Community Hospital. The department said that ground transportation would comprise about 45 minutes of travel over rough 4×4 terrain followed by another 15 to 20 minutes by ambulance.
