KAILUA-KONA — One lane of Kawaihae Road was shutdown because of a brush fire this afternoon.

Hawaii Fire Department personnel were called out to the blaze at 2:54 p.m. Officials say the fire was small and burning in keawe on the mauka side of Kawaihae Road, almost directly across from the LST landing at Kawaihae Harbor.

The fire grew to about a half-acre. Fire Battalion Chief Michael Grace said it burned down one power pole and threatened a home. The road was reopened shortly after 5 p.m.

Grace said the fire was contained fairly quickly.

“We’re fortunate we got there fast enough,” he said.

Crews were called off the fire at 3:58 p.m.

Grace said it is unknown how the fire started at this time.
