DCCA launches business check campaign
HONOLULU — The Department of Commerce and Consumers Affairs has begun airing a public service announcement to highlight the BusinessCheck website at http://BusinessCheck.hawaii.gov/.
The campaign encourages the public to protect themselves from unfortunate circumstances by utilizing BusinessCheck resources to lookup and check on companies, individuals or licensed professionals that they intend to hire or do business with.

Free business cyber security seminar
KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union (HCFCU) is sponsoring “Securing Your Business,” a free seminar that will be presented by Darrell Ellis, operations manager at HTS Alarms, and Dustyn Iwamoto, owner of Top Tech, which provides company technology solutions.
This informative seminar will be held 9:30-11:30 a.m. April 27 at HCFCU’s Kaloko facility, 73-5611 Olowalu Street, Kailua-Kona, in the John Y. Iwane Credit Union Center Training Room.
The seminar will provide attendees with invaluable information on such topics as protecting your business from theft and liability, turning your commercial property into a SMART business, and cyber security practices.

Nathaniel receives customer service award
HILO — Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center recently announced that Mike Nathaniel, dietary aide, has been selected as the skilled nursing and rehab center’s 2018 Whatever It Takes And Then Some annual winner.
This award is given to an associate who has demonstrated excellence in customer service and the Whatever It Takes And Then Some spirit. This year’s recipient has demonstrated many times over the qualities deserving of this award.
Along with the award, Nathaniel was presented with a $500 cash prize.
Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center, located at 1333 Waianuenue Avenue, is a 120-bed nursing facility providing skilled, intermediate and respite care. The facility is managed by Life Care Centers of America.
How to hire stellar employees
The West Hawaii Small Business Development Center will be offering a workshop, “How to Hire, Train, and Retain Stellar Employees” 9-11:30 a.m. Thursday. Registration is 8:45 a.m. at Hale Iako in Suite 119, 73-970 Makako Bay Drive, Kailua-Kona, on the NELHA (OTEC) campus.

Sustainable Businesses showcased at Chamber event
KAILUA-KONA — Sustainable businesses gathered to share their expertise in green business practices and environmental stewardship at the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce Annual Kuleana Green Business Fair on Wednesday.
The fair took place at the Chamber’s monthly networking event, AfterHours, which was hosted by Hawaii Community College — Palamanui.
The Kuleana Green Business Program is an original Chamber initiative launched in 2006 to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable business practices. Members understand their kuleana (right and responsibility) to create positive impacts economically, socially and environmentally.
The Kuleana Green Businesses in attendance included: Body Glove Cruises, Cyanotech Corp., Friends of NELHA (FON), Jack’s Diving Locker, Ke Kai Ola/The Marine Mammal Center, ProVision Solar, Inc., Recycle Hawaii, Sunrun Inc., Sustainable Island Products, The Kohala Center and Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative, Inc.
The Chamber congratulated event host Hawaii Community College — Palamanui for becoming the newest Kuleana Green Business member. Other new Kuleana Green Businesses in attendance this year were CarbonBuddy, Malama Kai Foundation and Pacific Blue Catchment.
As part of the event program, Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Wendy Laros announced that the winners of the Kuleana Green Business Member of the Year Award for 2019 were Dr. Jacob Head and Jolene Head, owners of Keauhou Veterinary Hospital.
Laros cited the veterinary hospital’s commitment to social, economic and environmental through their involvement with local organizations and events, excellent treatment of employees and work to make their building more energy efficient.
