Mural to be unveiled Monday
The community is invited to attend the unveiling of a mural honoring the Kealakehe ahupuaa Monday morning at Kealakehe High School.
The mural represents the stories of Kealakehe’s ahupuaa, honoring Hualalai, the spiritual forces, ancestral values, cultural traditions and humanistic pride, to carry on through generations.
Kumu Keala Ching, teacher Karen Sheff and Keep It Flowing have been working with a host of students to create the mural honoring the ahupuaa within which the high school lies. Ching imparted knowledge to the students, teaching them two chants that he composed for Kealakehe, which the students will echo throughout the unveiling.
The mural was made possible through a Department of Education Hawaii Innovation Grant and Kealakehe High School administration. Supporting the project were Kealakehe students and teachers, the Sheraton Kona Resort at Keauhou Bay, Kona Town Brand, Akamai Art Supply and Kellee Kubota.
Check-in for the unveiling is at 8 a.m. Monday at the school’s main office. The event is expected to begin about 8:15 a.m.
