Kona Japanese Civic Association announces scholarship recipients

Konawaena’s Andi Uemura and Kealakehe’s Liana Lawson were announced as recipients of the 2019 Kona Japanese Civic Association’s $1,500 scholarships at the annual Japanese Food Festival and Kodomo No Hi on April 28.

Uemura, a Future Farmers of America member and 4-year varsity softball player, as well as a community volunteer, will attend Yakima Valley College where she plans to pursue a degree in elementary education. She is the daughter of Aaron and Dara Uemura.

Lawson, a 4.06 student who is a member of the Interact Club and National Honor Society and a volunteer at various community events, will attend Oregon State University where she will major in bio health sciences. Her parents are Jon and Georgianne Lawson.

These students were selected based on their financial need, excellent academic records, extracurricular activities and their interest in promoting and perpetuating the Japanese culture.
