Nylin Kailua Village Artists featured artist in July

The Kailua Village Artists featured artist for the month of July is oil painter Christal Nylin.

Nylin is known in Kona for her paintings of coffee images and local island sites. She regulaly paints with the West Hawaii Plein Air Painters. Nylin moved to the Big Island in 1978 inspired by the beauty and creativity of Hawaii. In 2007, she finally set up an easel and started painting those inspirations on canvas.

Nylin just returned from an art study in France and will be exhibiting her paintings from Provence along with her island scenes. Among her featured paintings will be “Les beaux villages de Provence” showing the olive groves and the rock formations of Provence in the background. Her featured island scenic painting is “Punaluu” of the old bridge among the lush tropical surroundings.

To learn more about the artist and her work, Nylin will be working at the gallery on Wednesdays, July 3, 17 and 31. The Kailua Village Artists Gallery is located at 75-5729 Alii Drive, Suite C-110 in the Kona Marketplace. The gallery is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Mailander is July’s Blue Sea Artisans featured artist

The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery featured artist for the month of July is multi-media artist Sue Mailander.

Mailander worked as fashion coordinator at a leading Los Angeles department store and then as an apparel designer in the L.A. garment industry during the ’60s and ’70s. Tiring of the “rat race,” she went on to learn the principles of wallpaper hanging and made of that another satisfying career.

Moving to a Kona macadamia nut farm in 1988, she welcomed the idea of working with Mother Nature. That opened her eyes to the beauty around and on the Big Island and she began painting with acrylics. Soon after she joined with Kailua Village Artists gallery as a working member and stayed with them for the next 23 years.

Ten years ago Mailander joined the Blue Sea Artisans as a founding member. In 2013, the gallery become a co-operative gallery and is still run by its artist members. In October 2016, the Blue Sea Artisans Gallery moved from its humble beginnings in the Kona International Marketplace to its current location in the Keauhou Shopping Center.

Mailander is introducing three new works to her Eye Of The Needle series. These can be seen, together with prior works, at Blue Seas Artisans gallery throughout the month of July. Her work is noted for its vibrant colors and textures.

To meet the artist and learn more about her work, Mailander works at the gallery Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery is located in the Keauhou Shopping Center, Courtyard, 78-6831 Alii Dr.

The gallery is open the rest of the week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
