West Hawaii County Band concert this evening
The West Hawaii County Band, a local community band of over 20 musicians, presents a one-hour concert of band music at 6:30 p.m. at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. The concert will feature marches, jazz tunes, films scores and traditional Hawaiian music.

Kahilu Theatre presents Dancers of Damelahamid
Native American company Dancers of Damelahamid will present “Spirit and Tradition” at 7 p.m. this evening at Kahilu Theatre as part of the Asia Pacific Dance Festival.
Through dramatic dance, captivating narrative, intricately carved masks and elaborate regalia, the Dancers of Damelahamid transform time and space, and bridge the ancient with a living tradition. Dancers of Damelahamid is an indigenous dance company from British Columbia, Canada.
The performance celebrates the beauty, diversity, and time-depth of their rich history of masked dances.

Meet the author of ‘Notch, the Rescued Dolphin’
The Kailua-Kona Public Library will host Martina Wing, author of “Notch, the Rescued Dolphin,” from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Once upon a time in Kona, a beautiful wild dolphin approached humans, in need of help escaping a fishing line. The dolphin waited patiently while divers freed him.
Martina Wing, co-owner of “Manta Ray Advocates” and the underwater camerawoman who documented the amazing encounter, was inspired by her video’s online virality to share this uplifting, educational story with children through the picture book.
Dive into the story of Notch with the author, and learn more about the importance of conservation and environmental protection during Saturday’s event. Copies of Martina’s book will be on sale at the end of the program for $20 (cash payment only).
This program is suitable for keiki ages 5 through 11 years old. Children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries, Kona (F.O.L.K.).

Movies Under the Stars is Saturday
Queens’ MarketPlace will host its monthly Movies Under the Stars on Saturday with a showing of “How to Train Your Dragon – The Hidden World.”
Attendees should bring a beach chair or blanket for the free outdoor movie that gets underway at dusk, about 7:15 p.m., at the Coronation Pavilion.
The PG film tells a surprising tale about growing up, finding the courage to face the unknown and how nothing can ever train you to let go. What began as an unlikely friendship between an adolescent Viking and a fearsome Night Fury dragon has become an epic trilogy spanning their lives. In this last chapter, Hiccup and Toothless will finally discover their true destinies, and dragon and rider will fight together to protect everything they’ve grown to treasure.

Abstract Only! Multimedia Juried Exhibit
The “Abstract Only!” exhibit is coming in August to Hilo’s Wailoa Center.
Sponsored by the Hawaii Island Art Alliance and hosted by Wailoa Center, the exhibit will feature 103 works of art by 46 artists from Hawaii Island and 26 artists from around the state, nation, and Japan.
An artists’ reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 2. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. Wailoa Center will be open on Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. when its Abstract Only! Juror, Philippe F. Nault will be hosting a gallery walk and talk. This event is free and open to the public.

Ukulele-making course registration coming up
Waipahu Community School for Adults – Kona Campus will be offering an ukulele-making course. The fall 2019 session runs Aug. 19 through Dec. 16. Classes are 6-9 p.m. each Monday, except holidays. Registration fee is $120 (cash or money order), plus $100 for materials, which is paid during class. A list of required tools and supplies will be provided during registration.
Registration will be Aug. 5-15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration must be done in person and is open on a first come, first served basis. The course is limited to 12 participants.

Kona Aloha Singers announces second session
The Kona Aloha Singers, an adult contemporary chorus, will begin its second session on Aug. 6 at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity on Lako Street. Check-in begins at 5 p.m. and rehearsal begins promptly at 6.
The chorus, under Artistic Director Katya Eaddy, will be learning choral arrangements from 20th and 21st century songwriters in a fun but serious singing environment. There are no auditions and reading music is not required.
A winter performance will be at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel on Dec. 1.
Cost to join the chorus is $90, high school singers $35 plus $45 for sheet music.

Hawaii Writers Guild to present Writers’ Voices
Hawaii Writers Guild will present its August Writers’ Voices reading from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Thelma Parker Memorial Library, 67-1209 Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea.
Writers’ Voices is an evening of original readings by guild members. Readers at the August Writers’ Voices will include members from around the Big Island: Virginia Fortner from North Kohala, Steven Foster and Jada Rufo from Waimea, and Bob Lupo from Hakalau. They will showcase a variety of stories about journeys of one sort or another.
Hawaii Writers Guild is an independent association of professional writers engaged in the promotion of cultural enrichment. The semi-monthly readings are free and open to the public.

BSA announces August featured artist
The Blue Sea Artisans featured member artist for the month of August is glass-blower Stacey Siegel.
Siegel, who started her enterprise “Sieglass” after moving to the Big Island in 1996, specializes in hand-blown miniature perfume bottles and vases. But, recently, Siegel has been working with a line of aluminum/glass jewelry.

The Kailua Village Artists’ featured theme for the month of August is “Summer,” a collective art exhibit by all member artists of the gallery.
