KAILUA-KONA — Wahine anglers went back in time and walked the talk to get ready for start fishing at the always entertaining kickoff party of the Huggo’s Wahine Fishing Tournament on Friday night.

The theme for the tournament is “Walk like an Egyptian,” which led to multiple Cleopatra doppelgangers and even some sphinxs socializing on the eve of start fishing.

The 24rd edition of the storied event — which is touted as the world’s largest ladies billfish tournament — begins today at 8 a.m. and will run until 4 p.m., with fish weigh-ins taking place at Honokohau Harbor.

Prizes are awarded for best decorated boat and best costumed team. The teams also compete for cash prizes, which are awarded to those reeling in the biggest fish in various categories.

The event leaves a lasting mark on the community as well, serving as a benefit for Family Support Hawaii. The tournament has raised some big bucks for the organization, which strives to “support families and communities in providing love and care for our children.

“We’re excited to be hosting our annual Wahine Tournament,” says Huggo’s owner Eric von Platen Luder said in a release. “Over the past 20 years this fun, charity-focused tournament has donated more than $180,000 to Family Support Hawaii. We’re thankful that through the community’s support of the event, FSH can make a difference in people’s lives.”
