Kona Civil Air Patrol cadets take flight
Cadets in Kona Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol recently took flights in the squadron’s Cessna 182. Cadets receive aerospace education, learn about safe ground handling of the aircraft, and also use the squadron’s flight simulators prior to their flights. The U.S. Air Force provides funding for up to five powered flights per cadet, with each flight having a prescribed syllabus increasing in skill level as the cadet progresses. Flights are designed to provide cadets with the maximum opportunity for hands-on flying of the aircraft under the supervision of an authorized CAP and FAA-certificated pilot.
Kona Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol also trains regularly to execute tsunami warning flights, searches for missing boaters, hikers, campers, and provides other emergency services using their aircraft and trained ground crews. Membership in Civil Air Patrol is open to young people aged 12 through 17 and to any adult wishing to be involved as a Senior Member. Kona Composite Squadron meets 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays at their airport building.

Little Miss Kona Coffee 2019 pageant returns
The 49th annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival is seeking contestants for the Little Miss Kona Coffee Pageant, held Nov. 3 at the Aloha Theater. Orientation is Aug. 17, and divisions are: Mini Miss 4yrs-6yrs; Little Miss 7yrs-9yrs; Young Miss 10yrs-12yrs; and Teen Miss 13yrs-16yrs.
Awards will also be given for Miss Congeniality, Miss Popularity and Miss Photogenic. Contestants will be judged on talent, private interview, fancy dress, Kona coffee picking fitness outfit, on-stage question and scholastic transcript review for the Teen Miss division.

McCormick makes dean’s list
Katelynn McCormick, of Kailua-Kona, has been named to the 2018-19 dean’s list of distinction at the University of Northern Colorado. Students who earned this distinction earned a combined GPA of a 3.75 or higher during at least two academic semesters and completed a minimum of 24 semester hours.
HCFCU raises $9,700 for Relay for Life
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union’s staff and members from its Hilo, Kohala and Honokaa branches brought in $9,702 for the American Cancer Society’s Hilo “Relay for Life” event. The monies were raised through in-branch ribbon sales, internal staff donations and fundraisers, as well as selling shave ice during the live event. HCFCU was honored to be the top credit union in amount raised and it placed third in total amount raised by a walking team.
The Hilo event was held in July; the Kailua-Kona Relay for Life will take place 4 p.m. to midnight, Aug. 17, at Hale Halawai on Alii Drive.
