KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Police Department officers will be perched atop scaffolding at the Kailua-Kona Walmart until Saturday for the annual Cop on Top fundraiser for Special Olympics.

The largest fundraiser of the year raises money for athletes’ travel expenses and uniforms.

All money raised stays in West Hawaii.

Last year West Hawaii raised over $31,000, the largest amount in the state.

This year organizers hope to surpass that total.

Officers began their lofty vigil Thursday morning with a $500 donation from an unidentified individual. As of 5 p.m. Thursday afternoon they raised over $6,000.

Officers, volunteers and athletes will be accepting donations from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
