KAILUA-KONA — Big Island police Thursday charged a 31-year-old Puna man with assault, terroristic threatening and other offenses following a reported shooting Monday at a residence in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
Kamanaokaaina K. Nakooka was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree terroristic threatening, ownership or possession (firearm) prohibited, carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, and unauthorized controlled of a propelled vehicle in connection with the incident that sent a 41-year-old man to the hospital, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
His bail was set at $105,000 pending an initial court appearance slated Friday.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday, police officers responded to a report of gunshots and a man screaming at a residence on 15th Avenue in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.
The 41-year-old victim was transported by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center where he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. He remained hospitalized in stable condition, police said Thursday.
Kamanaokaaina “Mana” Nakooka, who was wanted for questioning in connection with the case, was arrested Tuesday afternoon inside a stolen vehicle at a vacant lot on 18th Avenue in Hawaiian Paradise Park, according to police. A 24-year-old woman was also seated within the stolen vehicle was also arrested.
The woman was identified as Malia K. Konanui of Keaau and continued investigation led to her arrest on Wednesday for unreleated charges, according to police. She was later charged with first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, and two counts of prohibited acts related to drug paraphernalia. Her bail was set at $12,500 pending an initial court appearance Thursday afternoon.
