Kona Coffee Cultural Festival calls for entries

The 49th Annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival toasts the roast with 10 days of coffee. From Nov. 1-10, residents and visitors are invited to participate in the colorful and tasty events brewing this year.

Cupping Competition

Calling all Kona coffee farmers! Coffee entries must be 100% Kona coffee grown in the district of Kona, and will be scored on the globally accepted and recognized Specialty Coffee Association cupping format. Enter by Oct. 25 at pacificcoffeeresearch.com/2019-kccf-cupping-registration.

Festival Lantern Parade

Walk along Alii Drive in the glowing procession of light, music and color starting 6 p.m. Nov. 1. at Kailua Pier (check-in before 4:30 p.m., enter by Oct. 25). Luminary bags available for $1 – decorate them prior to the parade! Entry forms: konacoffeefest.com/event-entry-forms.

Coffee Recipe Contest

Grant given to revitalize native Opelu fishing

KUPA Friends of the Hookena Beach Park, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located at Hookena has been selected for a $99,940 Community Grant Award from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

The Community Grant Award will be used to revitalize native Hawaiian opelu fishing practices in Hookena’s nearshore fisheries. Master fishermen who are skilled in these practices will feed and monitor 10 opelu ko’a and gather data on the health of the ko’a along with other scientific information such as water temperature, currents, tides, moon phases and fish maturity. Portions of the award will go toward outreach and education of current opelu fishermen and to train new and next generation fishermen.

Kona Hospital benefits from Eagle project

For his Eagle Scout project, Sean Kobayashi selected the garden area in front of Patient Registration, Radiation Oncology, and the adjacent driveway at Kona hospital. He enlisted the help of Troop 15, SNI, the Leo Club, Lions Club of Kona, 4-H, Konawaena Swim Team and numerous friends to assist him in the renovation.

Sean is the son of Mark and Jill Kobayashi, and has completed all the requirements and will be going before the Eagle Board of Review to become an Eagle Scout.
