The Society for Kona’s Education &Art for Kona’s Education &Art is presenting two workshops with artist and botanist Linda Ann Vorobik, Ph.D.
Introduction to Botanical Art, Tropical Style, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
In this workshop, students will learn the basics for creating botanical illustrations through demonstrations and lectures, with ample time for guided practice. Lectures will introduce the part of the plants and a discussion of botanical illustration and its components.
Linda will teach drawing skills and students will create pencil drafts for watercolors, followed by a discussion of pen and ink supplies and a demonstration of their techniques. Watercolor supplies and techniques will be introduced, and students will create a small but detailed plant portrait. The workshop will close with a friendly critique of the work completed. All skill levels are welcome.
Tuition for this workshop is $160 or $150 for SKEA members. Supply list is provided by Linda upon request, although Linda will supplement those supplies that participants already have.

Botanical Watercolor, Tropical Style, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 26 &27.
In this workshop, students will learn the how to create botanical watercolors that represent a true and lifelike representation of the plant studied. Lectures and demonstrations will cover watercolor supplies and basic techniques, different styles of botanical watercolors, and advanced techniques.
Much of the workshop will be devoted to drawing and painting with supervision by the instructor. The workshop will finish with a friendly critique of paintings produced. All skill levels are welcome, however students with previous instruction from the first workshop “Introduction to Botanical Art” (see above) or equivalent would be helpful. Accomplished artists can increase their knowledge of botany and skilled botanists will learn drawing and painting. Supply list is provided by Linda upon request, although Linda will supplement those supplies that participants already have.

Vorobik is a botanist and botanical illustrator with many years of experience as a teacher, botanist, and artist. She teaches botany and botanical art workshops at various universities, field stations, and botanic gardens, conducts field research in the Siskiyou Mountains in Oregon and in the Sierra Nevada. Linda is principal illustrator for botanical works such as The Flora of North America (Grasses), The Jepson Manual: Higher Plants of California, The Jepson Desert Manual, A Flora of San Nicolas Island, and A Flora of Santa Cruz Island.
