ShakaStock is coming to town.
The team of musicians and performers will share the sights and sounds of Woodstock 1969 to Kona on Feb. 22 at Privateer’s Cove in Kailua-Kona. In tribute to the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, Big Island Latin Gypsy Funk band Leche de Tigre alongside additional incredible performers from across the Big Island present ShakaStock: The Best of Three Days of Peace and Music.
The performance with showings at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. will musically and visually recreate some of the most memorable performances from the original Woodstock festival in 1969. A similar performance in October at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea sold-out the venue.
The Woodstock Music and Art Fair took place Aug. 15-18, 1969, on a 600-acre dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains of New York and drew half a million people for what is now known as one of the most legendary events in rock history.
“The time was a tumultuous and divided one: protests throughout the 1960s in opposition of the Vietnam War, and for civil rights and equality, were abundant and substantial influencers on the younger generation and consequently on the music of the time. The result was a community of young ‘rebels,’ lovers of music and peace, whose common goal was social change and to bring an end to the Vietnam War,” according to a press release announcing the event. “The Woodstock festival was a chance for these young people to gather peacefully, and for artists who have become legendary icons to express through music their shared interest in a better future.”
Performers will be emulating not only the music and artists themselves, but will construct a space where it is possible for the imagination to step back in time. Performances will include songs by Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker and more.
ShakaStock performers include Dan Brauer of Leche de Tigre, providing lead and rhythm guitar and channeling Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix, Abraham “Bubba” Lee Myers of RealEyeZen as Joe Cocker and Alvin Lee of Ten Years After (vocals – to be accompanied by Lauren Broido on guitar), Malia Spencer-Chaul of Ms Demeanor and The Felons as Janis Joplin, Joey Bradley as Richie Havens (vocals – to be accompanied by Dan Brauer on guitar) and Sly Stone, Lee Glennan on Santana vocals, Stephanie Lou Tatum as Joan Baez, Alicia Maher as Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane and Melanie Safka, Ronnie Velveta of Ronnie V. and the Family Band as Country Joe McDonald, and Samantha Wilson, Alicia Maher, and Stephanie Lou Tatum on back up vocals and as Crosby, Stills and Nash. Musicians include Chris Wilson on drums, Robby Malovic on bass, Scott Van-Spronsen on keyboard and congas, Michaeloha Elam on trumpet, Ian Work on saxophone, Jocelyn Michelle on Hammond organ, Lauren Broido on lead guitar, Joe Marcelin on congas and timbales, and Lucas Lessa on lead guitar.
Tickets are $25 for general admission and $40/$50/$60 for VIP reserved seating and can be purchased online at www.LDTBand.com. World Cuisine-style dinner will be available at the event for an additional cost.
