Seventy-seven people were cited and 17 people arrested for violating Gov. David Ige’s stay-at-home order between April 8 and Tuesday.
All but 12 of the citations occurred in West Hawaii, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. In Kona, one person was arrested and 22 cited while three people were arrested eight people cited in South Kohala. In North Kohala, 13 people were cited. Ka‘u recorded one arrest and 22 citations.
While the majority of citations occurred on the Big Island’s leeward side, East Hawaii saw 12 of the island’s 17 arrests. In South Hilo, 11 persons were arrested and seven cited; in Puna one person was arrested and in Hamakua five people were cited.
Since the start of the order, which went into effect March 26, the Hawaii Police Department’s total enforcement stands at 162 individual offenses, which includes 40 arrests, 115 citations, and seven additional cases.
Violating the stay-at-home order, which remains posted until April 30, carries a fine up to $5,000 or one year incarceration.
