Seventeen people were arrested last week on the Big Island for violating Gov. David Ige of a stay-at-home order, bringing the total number of arrests since the order went into effect March 25 to 72.
Four of the 17 arrests were specific to visitors violating the 14-day travel self-quarantine, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Three arrests were in South Hilo and one arrest was in Kona.
Between April 22 and Tuesday, officers arrested 17 people and cited 18 persons for “prohibited acts” in violation of Ige’s orderaccording to statistics released Wednesday afternoon by the Hawaii Police Department.
In West Hawaii, Kona saw one person arrested and four people cited while South Kohala saw one arrest and two citations, according to the department. Inn Ka‘u, two persons were cited and in North Kohala two people were arrested.
East Hawaii, South Hilo saw 11 people arrested and nine people cited, according to police. In Puna, one person was cited and one person was arrested, and in Hamakua one person was arrested.
Violation of the stay-at-home order is a misdemeanor offense that carries up to a year in jail and a fine of no more than $5,000. Since the start of the stay-at-home order at 12:01 a.m. March 25, Hawaii Police Department officers have arrested 72 and issued 186 citations.
Ige recently extended the order through 11:59 p.m. May 31.
