This year, Special Olympics Hawaii’s Aukake Classic playing field looked a little different as athletes and coaches took the state competition online.

This weekend, 49 athletes from across the state competed in the Aukake Fitness Classic virtually. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Special Olympics Hawaii was unable to hold their traditional Aukake Classic competition in-person.

In order to keep everyone safe, Special Olympics Hawaii decided to create a new format of training and competition, which consisted of eight weeks of online fitness training and their first every virtual competition. The fitness events included athletes and unified teams of all abilities.

To qualify for the virtual Aukake Fitness Classic on Aug. 8, athletes participated in area and regional competitions throughout the month of July.
