Virtual talk story Thursday with author Nancy Pearl
One of America’s most beloved librarians, Nancy Pearl, will discuss her new book, “The Writer’s Library: The Authors You Love on the Books That Changed Their Lives” during a virtual author talk story on Thursday.
Pearl is also a best-selling author and literary critic, as well as a radio and television personality. The free, 45-minute presentation begins at 3 p.m. at www.facebook.com/hsplshigov. A Facebook account is not required to participate.

Kipaipai, meaning “to encourage and inspire,” is a professional development program co-founded and led by Lancaster Museum of Art and History Museum Manager and Curator Andi Campognone. It focuses on professional practices in areas of gallery representation and museum exhibitions, self-promotion, use of social media in promotion, the importance of relevant critical writing, presentation, and identifying and strategizing personal and professional goals.
The 2020 exhibit featuring 21 artists from Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island remains on display through Nov. 8. Viewing hours are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday at Simperman and Hamakua Galleries at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea.
Art from Kipaipai Fellows 2020 exhibit selected for purchase
The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Arts Award Acquisition Committee has recommended three pieces from the Kipaipai Fellows 2020 exhibit for purchase for the Arts in Public Places Collection, Kahilu Galleries announced recently.

‘Queen of Makaha Rell Sunn’ opens Oct. 23
Aloha Theatre’s Voices from the Ring of Fire series presents “Queen of Makaha Rell Sunn” opening Oct. 23 and continuing on weekends through Nov. 8.
Written by Brian Hiroshi Wake, “Queen of Makaha” tells the story of women’s surfing pioneer and community hero Rell Sunn. While staying at an experimental cancer clinic, Sunn meets a disheartened young girl from the mainland. Sunn and her visiting friend, Carol, share life experiences, and the two become friends in this moving play about the woman whose spirit and actions made her a heroine to many.
The virtual performance, which is directed by Jaquelynn Jeanne Collier, is available online at www.apachawaii.org. There is no ticket price, however, donations are accepted.
