Nonprofit announces upcoming Ohana Food Drop events
The Food Basket will hold its Ohana Food Drop on Tuesday in Waimea, Wednesday in Puna and Thursday in North Kohala.
Ohana Food Drops — a drive-through operation in which participants remain in their cars and provide information to food bank staff and volunteers through signage and hand motions — replace The Food Basket’s normal “high touch” distributions as an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
Distribution will occur Tuesday at Waimea District Park in South Kohala, Wednesday at Keaau High School and Thursday at Kamehameha Park in North Kohala. Supplies will be available on a first come, first serve basis starting at 10 a.m.
Remaining events for November are Nov. 10 at Naalehu Hongwanji Temple in Naalehu; Nov. 11 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo; Nov. 13 at Kamakoa Nui Skate Park in Waikoloa; Nov. 17 at Cooper Center in Volcano; Nov. 19 at Old Kona Airport Park Pavilion in Kailua-Kona; Nov. 20 at Pahoa Community Center in Pahoa; and Nov. 25 at Honokaa Sports Complex and Skate Park in Honokaa.
HCC-Palamanui hosts workshop
Hawaii Community College — Palamanui is hosting an “All About Palamanui” Zoom workshop on Wednesday.
This free workshop is part of the Discover Palamanui series and provides an opportunity for the community to learn about the degree and certificate programs offered and how to enroll. There are two scheduled times to participate in this workshop, either from 10:30 to 11 a.m. or 5:30 to 6 p.m.

Online support available for family caregivers
The Hawaii Community Caregiver Network, which has supported West Hawaii family caregivers over the years with caregiver conferences and Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes, has expanded its online offerings to serve local caregivers during the pandemic.
HCCN’s website, www.hawaiicaregivers.org, has been updated to offer a wide range of resources, including Zoom classes created by the Alzheimer’s Association, Catholic Charities of Hawaii, AARP, and other agencies. Topics include care options and resources; effective communication; legal and financial planning; and caregiving for persons with memory loss.
“We want to support our family caregivers with online information and resources, until we can meet together again,” says HCCN founding member Judy Bell.
The website lists phone contacts including the Hawaii County call center for COVID-19. HCCN has also created a Facebook group for family caregivers to share ideas and connect with others about the challenges they all face.
