A 30-year-old Kailua-Kona man is facing an array of property offenses after reportedly breaking into a Kailua-Kona residence and threatening its occupant before leaving in the victim’s vehicle.
Shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, Kona Patrol officers responded to a report of an active burglary at a home in the 74-5000 block of Palani Road, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Upon arrival, officers learned that the victim had been home in bed and was confronted by a man who had entered the home without permission.
The man allegedly made threats toward the victim and proceeded to search the residence, eventually leaving in the victim’s vehicle, police said.
The man, identified as Nicholas A. Volpa, was later located on the 78-6000 block of Walua Road after unlawfully entering another occupied residence without permission. Patrol officers, who arrested Volpa without incident, also located the stolen vehicle.
On Monday, Volpa was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree unauthorized entry into a dwelling, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, habitual property crimes, resisting an order to stop, and driving without a valid license, according to police. Bail was set at $74,000 for Volpa, who is also on state parole.
Volpa made his initial court appearance Tuesday in Kona District Court. During the hearing before Per Diem Judge Joseph Florendo, bail was reduced to $25,000. A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday.
