A man in his 30s required rescue Monday after he possibly fractured his hip during a falling while hiking in the area above Piihonua Falls in Kaumana.

Responding to the 2:08 p.m. alarm, fire rescue personnel arrived at the scene about 18 minutes later to find a man in his 30s with a possible hip fracture, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. The man had apparently been hiking near the river’s edge and slipped and fell.

Fire rescue personnel were lowered to the scene by a helicopter and extricated the victim from the river’s edge, according to the department. The victim was then brought to a landing zone where medics took over and transported him in stable condition via ambulance to Hilo Medical Center.
