Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for suspected drunken driving Feb. 15 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

South Hilo officers arrested nine drivers while Kona officers arrested six, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala officers arrested one.

So far this year, there have been 182 DUI arrests compared with 156 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 97 major accidents so far this year compared with 145 during the same period last year.

Five fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, five people had also died.
