Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for suspected drunken driving Feb. 22 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Kona officers arrested seven drivers while South Hilo officers arrested six and Puna officers four, according to data released Wednesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala officers arrested two.

So far this year, there have been 201 DUI arrests compared with 191 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 123 major accidents so far this year compared with 167 during the same period last year.

Five fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, six people had died.
