Lions Club of Kona awards scholarships

The Lions Club of Kona recently presented college scholarships to six Konawaena High School seniors.

The $1,000 Lions Club of Kona Community Service Scholarship was awarded to Tiare Quintal while the $1,000 Lions Club of Kona Rose Elfman Ross Memorial Scholarship went to Tyra Bailey. Earning the $1,000 Lions Club of Kona General Scholarship were Brianna Izawa and Shyann Nahale and earning the $1,000 Outstanding Konawaena High Leo Club Member Scholarship was Caileen Teramoto. Brett Lewandowski was awarded the $1,500 Lions Club of Kona Lion Ralph Fukumitsu Memorial Scholarship.

“These remarkable young adults have shown they will continue to excel in college as well as give back to the community. Helping young people continue their education is one of the challenges our community faces, and it’s a need our club continues to address. We are also extraordinarily grateful for the support and contributions we received from members of the community. You are helping us make a difference,” said Lion Leigh Ikeno.

In addition to the scholarship, the club conducts a variety of projects and events, including hearing and vision screenings, environmental projects, and patterned with The Food Basket on food distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lions Club of Kona has 65 members and is currently meeting at 6:30 p.m. the third Monday of each month via Zoom. For more information or to get involved, email skonalionsmembership@gmail.com.

Applicants sought for North Kohala, Ka‘u CDP committees

The County of Hawaii is seeking applicants for its Community Development Plan (CDP) Action Committees for North Kohala and Ka‘u. Many applications have been received from other regions and are under review.

The purpose of CDPs is to translate the General Plan’s broad statements into actions specific to the planning area; improve and advance community resilience; and provide civic dialogue for citizen engagement.

Committee members are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the County Council. They must reside in the CDP planning area
