Kona Dance and Performing Arts is celebrating its fifth anniversary this spring.
Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, KDPA said it has offered an average of 28 classes in each of the three sessions and filled an average of 182 class slots in each session.
Currently, students are preparing for a virtual performance called “Celebrate,” which will be filmed live at Aloha Theatre this month. The nonprofit’s generous donation allows KDPA to use the theater and facilities to film and later host a virtual viewing for all.
Students have been filmed in studio performances this year, but this virtual concert will be their first staged performance, including lighting and costumes in over a year.
“This has been an unforgettable season with so many challenges and triumphs. Our five-year anniversary marks a successful year where we maintained all operations without a hitch once we re-opened after being closed for almost seven months. This upcoming virtual performance is a crowning achievement,” Managing Director Heidi Noche said.
The spring production will encompass a variety of styles of dance ranging from ballet, jazz, tap to hip hop and musical theater. Choreography is by Jaquelynn Collier, Harli Meech, Debra McGee, Andreas Tolaas, Shiloh Goodin, Tamara Doherty, and Katy Raczkowski.
